Government to build seven police stations in Tiaty, Baringo in bid to curb banditry

Tiaty Sub-County has been classified as a banditry hotspot, often affected by insecurity and poor access to government services.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that the government will establish seven new police stations in Tiaty, Baringo County, by the end of the year, in a bold effort to tackle insecurity and increase government presence in the banditry-prone region.

Speaking in Kabarnet ahead of the Jukwaa la Usalama town hall meeting, Murkomen expressed concern over the limited government presence in Tiaty and said the situation has contributed to persistent insecurity in the region.

“Silale Ward, for example, has one secondary school and no police station. We need government presence where there's a problem. We will have a station there,” he said.

Tiaty Sub-County has been classified as a banditry hotspot, often affected by insecurity and poor access to government services.

As part of broader efforts to restore peace, the CS also pledged to improve security infrastructure, including roads and mobile network coverage, to ensure faster response and better communication in remote areas.

Murkomen also raised alarm over low rates of national identity card registration in the county.

He noted that more than 161,000 adults in Baringo lack national IDs, with Tiaty being the most affected sub-county. He promised to work with the County Government and local leaders to mobilise residents to register for the vital documents.

“We have to do something,” he said, emphasising that access to identification is key to service delivery and national integration.

The CS further assured the residents that the security operation in the region will continue until peace is restored.

Before the town hall meeting, the CS met with the county security team and assessed registration services at the County Commissioner’s Grounds.

He was accompanied by Deputy Inspector General of Police – APS Gilbert Masengeli, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Abdi Hassan, and other senior government officials.
